Huawei finally unveiled the P9 and P9 plus on April 6 at a launch event in London. The P9 is sleek and slender with a 5.2-inch screen while the P9 plus is slightly larger with a 5.5-inch display and is the first of the Huawei’s P series to have the Press Touch feature similar to that on Apple iPhone 6S.
The P9 is powered by the Kirin 955 processor and comes in two models – the 3GB RAM/32GB storage model and the 4GB RAM/64GB storage model. It is also available in single-sim and dual-sim variants. The P9 Plus also runs on the the Kirin 955 processor but comes in the 4GB RAM/64GB storage model only.
Huawei claims that the 3000mAh battery of the P9 can last a day and a half under normal use. The P9 plus has a 3400mAh battery with rapid charging feature.
Speaking of colors, the P9 comes in six variants but the availability of the colors is dependent on the market and carrier.
The Leica dual lens camera seems to be the selling point of the P9 flagship. The RGB camera focuses on color and the monochrome camera works on the details. And you can take better selfies in low light with the 8 megapixel front-facing camera.
Beyond the aesthetics, the P9 runs the usual Emotion UI on top of the stock Android OS as with other Huawei devices. Specifically, it runs EMUI 4.1 on top of Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
I’m personally not a fan of the Emotion UI. It was one of the reasons i reconsidered getting a Huawei phone last year. But if you like some form of “a-bit-complicated” modifications to the stock Android OS, you should consider the P9. It’s got no app drawer like the iOS so you access all your apps from the home screen.
