The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are finally here and there is a powerful processor, improved cameras, stereo speakers and the headphone jack is no more.
Here’s everything you need to know about the new iPhones.
Design and Display
The new phones look very similar to last year’s iPhone 6s and 6s plus, with an aluminium body. The screen size is very much the same – a 4.7-inch, 1334 x 750 display on the 7, and a 5.5-inch full HD display on the 7 Plus. The new phones have upgraded displays that are 25 percent brighter, with a wider color gamut and the 3D Touch pressure that debuted on the 6S.
The new iPhones are water resistant -and dust resistant (IP67 rating). This means that you shouldn’t have to worry much about your phone getting into water but you still have to be a little careful though.
Apple has also introduced two new colours for the iPhones – a matte black and high-gloss jet black to join the standard silver, gold and rose gold flavours.
A revamped camera
The camera department went through an overhaul and the output is awesome.
The smaller of the two sports a 12MP camera with a larger f/1.8 aperture that lets in 50 percent more light than the iPhone 6s. The new 12MP sensor is 60 percent faster and 30 percent more energy efficient. Apple has added optical image stabilization and a new six-element lens for brighter and detailed shots to the package. The front side also sees an upgrade from the 5-megapixel shooter on the 6s to a 7-megapixel FaceTime HD camera.
The 7 Plus, of course, comes with more features. It has dual 12MP cameras – one lens is wide angle and the other is telephoto. This dual-camera setup along with the improved ISP technology gives you 2x optical zoom, and up to 10x digital zoom.
No Headphone jack
Ok! Apple ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack and included a pair of Lightning EarPods plus an adapter in the box to make up for the removed headphone jack. So you could still use your headphone but you’ll unable to charge your phone at the same time.
But don’t be sad, Apple says they took the headphone jack out to give you something better – wireless AirPods powered by a custom-designed W1 chip.
The AirPods have infrared sensors to detect when they’re in your ears and motion sensors to activate Siri. They can also work with your Apple Watch, iPad, or Mac.
The AirPods are said to last up to 5 hours on a single charge and you can even get 24 hours of battery life with the
charging case. The new AirPods will be available in October for $159.
And the audio? “We’ve switched to Stereo”
Apple has finally switched to a stereo speaker system, with speakers placed at the top and bottom of the phone.
The stereo speakers provide 2x the output of the iPhone 6s and increased dynamic range.
iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will ship with Apple latest operating sytem – iOS 10. The new OS features a more powerful lockscreen with notifications , improved widgets, Siri app integration, new messaging features, a new Home app with better support for home automation, and more.
Under the hood….
The iPhone 7 is fueled by the new and powerful A10 Fusion chip with four cores – two are high-performance, and the other two are high-efficiency cores for power savings.
The 64-bit quad-core processor is 40% percent faster than the A9 chip on the iPhone 6s and twice as fast as the A8. Apple is also using a new custom-designed performance controller to balance performance and efficiency.
Force Touch Home button with Taptic feedback
Apple has brought in the Force Touch feature used on its recent MacBooks.
The Force Touch Home button works with the new Taptic Engine to give vibration feedback when pressed. This taptic feedback can be customized too.
Apple seems to have ditched a number of things this year. The 16GB storage option is no more, making 32GB the base storage model. They also added a 256GB variant which is the maximum.
So the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will be available in 32GB, 128GB and 256GB models.
And just to add, the Jet Black is only available on 128GB and 256GB models.
Pricing and Availability
The iPhone 7 will be available for purchase starting September 16, but preorders starts on September 9.
The 32GB model of the iPhone 7 will cost $649, while the 128GB and 256GB will cost $749 and $849 respectively.
The iPhone 7 Plus on the other hand will cost $769 for the 32GB, while the 128GB and 256GB carry price tags of $869 and $969 respectively.
