Sometimes I see a status or get a message from one of my WhatsApp contacts that reads “Lost all my contacts. Please send me a message with your name”.
Loss of contacts accidentally or otherwise can be really annoying. Imagine not being able to communicate your family and friends. But, wait! Just before you start to panic, maybe you haven’t really lost your contacts – they could just be hiding somewhere in your phone.
So, before making any moves to recover your lost or deleted contacts, the first thing you need to do is to confirm if they are really gone.
Here’s how to do that:
- Go to your Contacts list.
- Click on the menu button (the three vertical dots) at the top-right.
- Click on Contacts to display.
- Check if All Contacts is selected.
- If it isn’t, select it and check if you have recovered your “seemingly” lost contacts. If it is selected, then you’ll have to try any of the two methods below to recover your lost contacts.
METHOD #1: Recover lost or deleted Contacts on Android using Gmail
If your Android device is synced with your Google Account, then you are in luck. Google provides a simple way to restore your contacts to any state it was within the past 30 days.
STEP #1: Login to your Gmail account using the web version.
STEP #2: Click Gmail at the top left and select Contacts from the drop-down menu.
STEP #3: When all of your Contacts appear, click More on the left side.
STEP #4: Click Restore Contacts.
STEP #5: Choose the time which you’ll like to restore your contacts to.
STEP #7: Click Restore.
STEP #8: After the process, go back and re-sync your Android device with your Google Account.
METHOD #2: Recover lost or deleted Contacts on Android using Android Data Recovery
If your Android device wasn’t synced with your Google account and you have no backup, don’t lose hope. There is still a good chance of recovering your lost contacts but you have to stop using your device or your contacts will be overwritten and the chances of recovering them will be reduced.
Before you begin, ensure that you have a minimum battery of 30%.
Then, follow the steps below:
STEP #1: Download and Install FonePaw Android Data Recovery on your computer.
Note: A trial version with limited functionality is available. This version allows you to scan your mobile phone and preview lost contacts. However, you will need the full version to recover your lost contacts.
STEP #2: Connect your Android device to your PC using a USB cable.
STEP #3: Enable USB debugging on your device by going to Settings > About Phone and tap on Build number several times until you get the message “You are now a developer”.
STEP #4: An interface will come up with options to select the kind of data you want to recover. Select Contacts and click Next to begin scanning.
STEP #5: After the scan is completed, your deleted contacts will be shown. You can then mark the ones you need and click Recover.
